The Kebbi State Government has announced the discovery of five new solid mineral deposits, increasing the total number of identified mineral resources in the state to over 30.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed-BK, confirmed the findings, highlighting their economic significance. The newly discovered minerals include Limestone in Jega, Iron Ore in Gwandu, Bauxite in Suru and Dandi, Coal in Birnin Kebbi, and Kaolin in Koko, Bagudo, Argungu, and Dandi.
These add to an already rich list of minerals found in the state, including Gold, Lithium, Copper, Zinc, Lead, and Marble, spread across various local government areas.
Speaking to newsmen during the weekend, Ahmed-BK credited the discoveries to the administration of Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, who has prioritized unlocking the state’s mineral wealth since taking office in 2023.
“This is a significant step towards economic diversification. Governor Idris has taken bold measures to revamp the mining sector, which had long been neglected,” he said.
Despite Kebbi’s mineral wealth, the absence of a dedicated mining commission had hindered development since the state’s creation in 1991. The commissioner noted that past administrations relied heavily on oil revenue, but Governor Idris has taken a proactive approach to positioning Kebbi as a key player in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
In September 2023, the governor temporarily suspended mining activities to curb illegal operations and enforce stricter regulations. Following federal approval for greater state involvement, mining has now resumed under a more structured framework.
As part of the reforms, Kebbi State has also established its first-ever Ministry of Solid Mineral Development. The ministry is now responsible for investor relations, regulatory enforcement, and exploration activities to maximize the sector’s potential.
Currently, several mining companies are operating in the state, while over ten more are awaiting licensing. Officials believe these developments could transform Kebbi into a major mining hub, boosting both local employment and state revenue.
