A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Aminu Jaji, has expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, emphasizing that Nigerians must abandon the notion that they deserve subsidies.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Jaji argued that the country’s economic policies have been overly generous, creating an unrealistic expectation of perpetual subsidies.
According to Jaji, the Federal Government’s reforms, including tax reform bills, telecoms, and electricity tariff hikes, are necessary measures aimed at addressing the country’s economic challenges.
He acknowledged the current hardship faced by Nigerians but cautioned that the situation cannot be resolved overnight.
Nigeria has been experiencing soaring inflation rates, with headline and food inflation reaching 34.80% and 39.93% in December 2024, respectively.
Economic experts attribute this rise to fluctuations in petroleum product prices, electricity tariff hikes, and the recent 50% telecom tariff increase.
