UYO, AKWA IBOM – A key member of Governor Umo Bassey Eno’s media team, Prince Chris Abasi Eyo, has resigned in protest over the governor’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Eyo, who served as Honorary Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, announced his resignation in a letter dated June 16, citing loyalty to the PDP as his reason.
“The governor’s directive, ‘defect with me or resign’, left no room for loyal dissent,” Eyo wrote in the letter addressed to the Akwa Ibom State Government House, Uyo.
He described the situation as a “strategic move” by the governor, but warned it would leave behind “a trail of political jetsams and flotsams.”
A source within the Government House said Eyo’s departure signals growing unease among staunch PDP supporters following the governor’s shift to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Losing people like Chris Abasi Eyo is a deep emotional and political wound. He was not just loyal, he was instrumental,” the source said under anonymity.
The resignation letter, received and stamped by the Governor’s Office, emphasized the emotional toll of the decision. “I have chosen to become a jetsam of the very ship I co-built,” Eyo declared.
Political analysts argue that such defections hurt party cohesion and public trust, especially when core campaign allies are lost to ideological divides.
Eyo’s decision underscores the ethical tension between personal loyalty and political realignment, a dilemma increasingly common in Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.
Governor Eno is yet to issue a formal response, but observers say the loss may weaken his grassroots media machinery and campaign credibility.
For the PDP in Akwa Ibom, Eyo’s resignation is both symbolic and strategic, as it shows that not all loyalists are willing to follow the governor across party lines.
“Defection may be tactical,” Eyo wrote, “but some of us still believe in the ideals we campaigned for.”
