Michael Ayuba Auta, the Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Southern Kaduna in the 2023 elections, has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The 43-year-old engineer and real estate mogul, who garnered over 100,000 votes in the last election, made the announcement at a defection ceremony in Fai Ward, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Truth Live News reports that Engr Auta cited political realities and widespread support from his constituents as the key reasons for his decision. He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for fostering peace and inclusivity in the region, particularly highlighting the appointment of General Christopher Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff as evidence of Southern Kaduna’s growing integration into the national political landscape.

Auta, a prominent figure in Southern Kaduna politics, promised to leverage his grassroots network to deliver one million votes for President Tinubu and Governor Sani in the 2027 elections. Reflecting on his performance during the 2023 general elections, where he helped secure 294,000 votes for Peter Obi despite limited resources, he expressed confidence in his ability to surpass that achievement under the APC.

“This government has given us a sense of belonging. Unlike the previous administration, President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani have not segregated us. Our people can now farm and do business without fear. I guarantee one million votes for the APC in 2027,” Auta declared.

The defection was celebrated by APC leaders and members, who view Auta’s move as a game-changer for the party in Southern Kaduna, a region traditionally characterized by political diversity. Hon. Dare Isuwa, Fai Ward Chairman, described it as “the happiest day of my life,” while Auta’s business associate, Hon. Elisha Yahaya, criticized the Labour Party for its perceived betrayal of Auta despite his contributions to the party’s growth.

Auta’s defection is expected to reshape the political landscape of Southern Kaduna, bolstering the APC’s influence in a region where the opposition has historically thrived. With his strong credentials and grassroots appeal, Auta’s alignment with the ruling party marks a strategic win for the APC as it gears up for the 2027 elections.

While Auta’s defection strengthens the APC, questions remain about the sustainability of his influence among Labour Party loyalists. The move underscores the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where grassroots mobilization often hinges on individual charisma rather than party ideology. The coming months will reveal whether Auta’s promises translate into tangible gains for the APC in Southern Kaduna.
