Nigeria’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has stepped in to broker peace between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
This comes after Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, leading to her six-month suspension from the Senate.
Minister of Women Affairs Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim described the incident as “unfortunate” and stressed the need for peace.
“We don’t want to lose any female member of the Senate or House of Representatives. We want to increase their numbers,” she said.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim reiterated her commitment to engaging stakeholders to ensure justice is tempered with mercy.
She also noted that the Senate President expressed openness to brokering peace during International Women’s Day celebrations at the National Assembly.
