IKOT EKPENE, AKWA IBOM – Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio on Friday declared open the South-South Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

Describing the gathering as “a democratic rite,” Akpabio said the review was vital to ensuring Nigeria’s constitutional framework meets the evolving dreams and demands of the people.

“This is not just another political event,” Akpabio stated via his official social media handle. “It is a moment for Nigerians to speak into the soul of the nation.”

He emphasized that no democracy is perfect and no constitution eternal, stressing the need for timely reforms that reflect the realities of the people.

The hearing, he noted, demonstrates the Senate’s belief that governance thrives on open dialogue and collective reasoning, not silence or political dominance.

Akpabio urged participants to contribute boldly and honestly, insisting that national interest must override party affiliations during such historic deliberations.

“Our task is not to abandon the past but to align it with the hopes of every Nigerian who wakes each day with dreams of a better future,” he added.

According to the Senate President, the review reflects strength, not weakness, an act of national responsibility aimed at constructing “a more inclusive and just Nigeria.”

Observers say the event holds deep significance as it invites grassroots participation in shaping Nigeria’s legal and democratic destiny.

In attendance were stakeholders from civil society, legal institutions, and traditional leadership, highlighting the broad interest in the reform process.

Constitutional lawyer, Barr. Imoh Umoren, described the hearing as “a step forward in returning power to the people and ensuring equitable governance structures.”

As deliberations continue across zones, many hope the outcome will correct systemic gaps and uphold justice and inclusion for all Nigerians.
