NOMAL Urges Presidency, NASS, to Fast-Track North Central Development Commission, For Equitable Growth

Toba Owojaiye reporting

A group under the aegis of the Northern Majority Alliance (NOMAL) has called on the Presidency to expedite the establishment of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) to address long-standing developmental imbalances in Northern Nigeria. This demand comes as other geopolitical zones—including the North East, South East, South South, and South West—already have dedicated regional development commissions that cater to their unique socio-economic challenges.

In a communiqué signed by its convener, Ibrahim Bunu, and made available to Truth Live News and other reputable media houses, NOMAL decried the rising levels of unemployment and underemployment among Northern youths, warning that the lack of economic opportunities has left many vulnerable to redundancy and negative influences.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to equity, unity, and progress, stressing that it stands ready to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 to build a future where every Northern voice is heard and every community is empowered.

> “We call on the Presidency to critically examine and revamp Skill Acquisition and Vocational Training programmes, including creating pathways for employability and entrepreneurship. This will harness the potential of Northern youths and mitigate societal vices,” the communiqué stated.

NOMAL emphasized its active engagement with key stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, to foster unity and development. According to the group, a united North, free from divisive influences, is essential for collective progress.

The communiqué also expressed concern over attempts to sow discord within the region through speculation about potential reshuffles in key positions within the current administration, including the Vice Presidency and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

> “Our priority remains to ensure the North’s collective interests are represented. The success of the Muslim-Muslim ticket demonstrates unity and performance that transcends religious or ethnic affiliations,” Bunu noted.

He further stressed that NOMAL remains open to future political arrangements that prioritize national unity and competence, stating:

“We remain open to similar combinations in the future, including a Christian-Christian ticket, provided it serves Nigeria’s best interests.”

Looking ahead to 2027, NOMAL insisted that political negotiations must ensure the Vice Presidency is situated in a Northern state that demonstrates overwhelming support for President Tinubu’s re-election. This, the group argued, would serve as a fair reward for loyalty and a strategic step toward national development.

With the North Central Development Commission still awaiting implementation, the call for its establishment has grown louder, as stakeholders across the region demand the same level of institutional support already granted to other zones.
