The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has assured passengers that train services on the Lagos–Ibadan Standard Gauge corridor remain fully operational despite a recent act of vandalism on the route.

In a statement on Tuesday, NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed that key signalling equipment was stolen and damaged by unidentified vandals between the Agege and Agbado stations in Lagos.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, 6 October, was discovered during a routine inspection of the tracks. The vandalised items included signal machine cap protectors and connection cables on Switch Point Machine No. 2.

Unyimadu condemned the act, describing it as a deliberate attempt to sabotage critical national infrastructure. He warned that tampering with railway signalling systems poses serious safety risks to passengers and staff and disrupts the smooth running of train operations.

Despite the damage, he assured commuters that services on the corridor were not disrupted. Train operations have continued without interruption while security agencies investigate the incident and hunt for the perpetrators.

The NRC urged communities living near railway lines to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help protect railway infrastructure.

The Lagos–Ibadan Standard Gauge rail line, inaugurated in 2021, is one of Nigeria’s busiest train routes, connecting the country’s commercial capital with the southwest region.
