The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has graduated 200 officers in basic arms training to strengthen internal security operations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The passing out parade (POP) ceremony took place on Wednesday at the NSCDC FCT Command headquarters in Abuja. The event featured drills, weapon handling demonstrations, and a silent parade, attended by top security officials, traditional leaders, and FCT Administration representatives.
FCT NSCDC Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, described the graduation as a significant step in the Corps’ commitment to improving operational readiness in response to evolving security threats in the capital.
“This is not just another ceremonial gathering,” Odumosu said. “It is a strong statement of our unwavering commitment to capacity building and enhancing internal security in the FCT.”
The 200 officers are the third batch of personnel trained in arms handling by the Command, following earlier groups of 135 and 137, bringing the total to 472 armed and trained officers in the FCT.
Odumosu likened the shift in security training to an African proverb: “When the rhythm of the drumbeat changes, the dance steps must adapt.”
He said the Corps must continue to evolve to meet growing security demands and highlighted a number of ongoing initiatives, including intelligence workshops, advanced investigation training, sign language basics, and tactical response courses.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) a specially trained, quick-response unit designed to handle high-risk situations in the FCT.
“We are not just passing out officers today. We are launching a crucial new unit, the Emergency Response Team. This elite team is trained to act swiftly and professionally in emergencies,” Odumosu explained.
He also revealed plans to build a state-of-the-art training facility that would serve as a hub for future capacity-building efforts.
Appreciating leadership support, Odumosu thanked the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, for his vision and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for providing operational equipment that enhances the Corps’ efficiency.
Addressing the newly trained officers, Odumosu reminded them of the weight of their new responsibilities.
“The rifle you now carry is not just a weapon, it is a responsibility,” he warned. “Let discipline, integrity, and professionalism be your guide. The uniform is not for harassment, but for service.”
Outstanding trainees were honoured with awards, while sister agencies received commendations for their collaborative support. The event concluded with a firm message of unity, professionalism, and continued efforts to keep Abuja safe and secure.
