NIGERIA, UYO – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has announced the 2025 Press Week Celebration with the theme “Journalism Practice in Akwa Ibom: The Turning Point.”
According to a release signed by the 2025 Press Week Planning Committee Chairman, Comrade Ndanti Ekuh, and Secretary, Comrade Nseabasi Valentine, the event will hold from Sunday, November 30 to Saturday, December 6, 2025.
The committee said the celebration aims to reflect on ethical journalism, innovation, and the transformative role of the press in society. It added that the programme would feature professional awards, artistic competitions, and essay contests for journalists and students.
In the professional category, entries are open for awards including Broadcaster of the Year, Reporter of the Year, Columnist of the Year, Feature Writer of the Year, and Newspaper of the Year, among others.
The committee directed that all entries must have been published or aired between December 2024 and September 2025, and submission closes on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Ekuh explained that the entries must be sealed, clearly marked, and addressed to “The Secretary, 2025 Press Week Planning Committee, NUJ Press Centre, Information Drive, Uyo.”

In a statement obtained by our correspondent, the organizers urged journalists to uphold professional ethics and accuracy in their submissions, stressing that excellence in reportage strengthens public trust in the media.
The Press Week will also feature a special artistic competition for NUJ chapels, encouraging performances based on the event’s theme. Categories include drama, panel discussion, spoken word, and paper presentations, with the best artistic entry receiving ₦200,000.
For the essay competition, the topic “Journalism Practice in Akwa Ibom: The Turning Point” will be contested in two categories, students and NUJ members.
The statement indicated that winners in the student category will receive ₦200,000, ₦100,000, and ₦50,000 respectively, while NUJ members will receive ₦300,000, ₦200,000, and ₦100,000 for the top three positions.
The NUJ Planning Committee emphasized that the event will not only celebrate achievements but also challenge practitioners to pursue ethical, fact-based journalism.
“This year’s Press Week is designed to reawaken the conscience of journalists and reposition the practice as a force for truth and development,” Ekuh stated.
The award presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo.
