Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has raised alarm over rising insecurity in Borno State, calling the situation in the Marte area “deeply troubling.”
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi urged the Federal Government to urgently send reinforcements to support military efforts already underway in the region.
“The security situation in Borno is not just concerning — it’s a national alarm bell that must not be ignored,” Obi said.
He praised Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his leadership, particularly his decision to visit and stay overnight in the troubled Marte area. Obi described Zulum’s actions as “present, proactive, and people-centred,” adding that it sets an example of what true leadership should look like.
Zulum had earlier raised concerns that insurgents were regrouping near Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills and warned that Marte was close to falling under terrorist control. Obi echoed these warnings, noting that more than 300 communities are now at risk and over 20,000 people have once again been displaced.
“These are not just numbers — they are families, children, and entire communities whose lives are at stake,” Obi said.
He criticized the Federal Government’s delayed response, stressing that words must be matched with decisive action. “Our security forces need reinforcements. Our displaced citizens need protection, not promises,” he added.
Obi warned that failure to act swiftly would not only endanger Borno but also threaten Nigeria’s unity and national integrity.
“This is not about politics,” he said. “It is about people. It is about protecting the soul of our nation. Let us act quickly, decisively, and justly.”
