The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has applauded Nigerians for their courage and solidarity in resisting what it described as an orchestrated attempt by anti democratic forces to seize control of the party’s National Secretariat on Tuesday.

In a press release signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, and made available to Truth Live News International, the newly elected National Working Committee, NWC, led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki said the firm support of citizens once again affirms the PDP as the party of choice as it moves toward reclaiming power in twenty twenty seven.

The party stated that the situation deteriorated shortly after Turaki arrived at Wadata Plaza for his inaugural meeting, accompanied by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. According to the release, compromised personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and thugs allegedly recruited by expelled former National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who was also expelled from the party, barricaded the entrance and attempted to stop the NWC from accessing the premises.

Eyewitnesses told Truth Live News that the group, without provocation, fired multiple tear gas canisters at governors, senior officials and supporters, causing panic and leading to several injuries. The statement claimed that more than two hundred canisters were fired at unarmed and harmless citizens who gathered for a lawful party meeting.

Despite the aggression, the PDP said its supporters and stakeholders remained resolute, insisting that legitimate party authorities must not be obstructed by external interference. The NWC eventually entered the secretariat after the standoff.

The party described the incident as a direct threat to Nigeria’s democratic structure, arguing that suppressing the opposition under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu undermines democratic principles and signals a drift toward authoritarianism.

When opposition is suppressed, elections lose their uncertainty and become predetermined rituals, the statement warned, adding that weak institutions, compromised security agencies and an overbearing ruling party mirror the conditions that collapsed previous republics.

The PDP called on democratic nations, institutions and global partners to unequivocally condemn this brazen assault on democratic freedom in Nigeria.

It further urged security agencies to resist political manipulation, focus on combating insecurity and refrain from enabling attacks on opposition groups.

Reaffirming its commitment ahead of twenty twenty seven, the NWC stated that the PDP will continue to resist any move by anti democratic actors to derail the party or weaken the nation’s democratic system.

Nigeria’s democracy must endure, the statement declared.
