PDP Defies Court Order, Vows to Proceed with National Convention

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will continue preparations for its upcoming national convention despite a court order restraining it from doing so.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier on Friday barred the party from holding the convention, which is scheduled for 15 and 16 November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Justice James Omotosho ruled that the PDP had allegedly breached internal procedures and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to receive, publish, or recognise any outcome from the proposed event until the party meets all statutory requirements.

However, in a statement issued late Friday, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticised the ruling, describing it as “an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.”

“The judgment does not vitiate our ability to proceed with preparations for the National Convention to elect new national officers who will lead the party for the next four years,” the statement read.

The party cited a recent Supreme Court ruling which it said reaffirmed the autonomy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.

“Our members, chapters, and organs should remain steadfast and focused on ensuring a successful National Convention,” Ologunagba added.

He said the PDP had instructed its legal team to file an appeal immediately, reaffirming the party’s commitment to the rule of law and its determination to defend Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

The upcoming convention is expected to elect new national officers who will lead the party into future elections.
