NIGERIA, ABUJA – Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday held a closed-door meeting at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
The meeting followed INEC’s rejection of the party’s notification to hold its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, citing procedural irregularities and unresolved disputes over the position of national secretary.
Channels TV reports that the PDP delegation included acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and the governors of Bauchi, Zamfara, Plateau, and Oyo States.
Speaking after the meeting, Saraki said, “Our presence here demonstrates PDP’s commitment to lawful engagement and institutional integrity. We’re here to protect internal democracy and the image of opposition politics.”

INEC officials maintained that the party must resolve its internal crisis before proceeding with key events, insisting on adherence to guidelines that ensure credible party administration.
Damagum stressed that PDP remains focused on repositioning itself as a stabilizing force for democracy in Nigeria, despite challenges. “This is not about factionalism. It’s about ensuring due process and party unity,” he said.
The presence of top party leaders was seen as a strategic move to strengthen the PDP’s public image as a responsible and organized opposition amid rising national political tension.
Governors in attendance reiterated their support for peacebuilding efforts within the party. “We are here in solidarity, not just for the NEC issue, but for the future of the PDP as a credible national platform,” Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi said.
Party insiders view the visit as an effort to reinforce PDP’s institutional relevance and rebuild public confidence ahead of future electoral cycles.
