Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is set to light up Kano State from Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025, as it holds its much-anticipated National Convention, a pivotal event that could reshape the country’s political trajectory ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This landmark gathering, approved at the PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on May 27, 2025, will serve as a critical platform for electing new national officers, reaffirming internal democracy, and galvanizing the party to reclaim its place as Nigeria’s democratic standard-bearer.

The Convention will be chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, with Governor Ademola Adeleke (Osun) as Vice Chairman and Governor Peter Mbah (Enugu) as Secretary. The party promises a process rooted in merit, transparency, and inclusivity, a sharp contrast to what it describes as the APC’s reign of “failed leadership and authoritarian drift.”

“This Convention is not just about leadership change — it is about national redemption,” a senior PDP official stated.

As Nigeria groans under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s APC-led government, the PDP is positioning itself as the beacon of hope for millions disillusioned by skyrocketing poverty, insecurity, economic instability, and systemic oppression.

“The APC has unleashed a wave of suffering through draconian economic policies, silencing of dissent, and attempts to reduce Nigeria to a one-party dictatorship,” the PDP said in a statement. “Nigerians must rise to stop this slide into authoritarianism.”

The PDP accuses the APC of using sponsored crises, intimidation, and manipulation of institutions to weaken opposition forces — a tactic they say betrays the ruling party’s fear of defeat in 2027.

With a renewed focus on grassroots mobilization and democratic revival, the PDP says the August Convention in Kano will mark the beginning of a national rescue mission.

“We are on a mission to rebuild Nigeria, restore hope, and protect the rights of every citizen,” said a party chieftain. “We call on all patriotic Nigerians to rally behind us in this defining moment.”
