The Osun State Police Command has responded to complaints from the Student Union Government of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) regarding the rise in robbery incidents in off-campus student residential areas.
The police command met with the university management and student leaders to address the security situation.
The Area Commander has deployed tactical police squads to conduct stop-and-search operations and collaborate with vigilantes and local guards.
The police have assured students that they will not be harassed and that any officer found doing so will face immediate action.
Students have, however, been advised to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with the police to achieve a common goal.
Truth Live News gathered that over 30 robbery cases involving students have been reported in two weeks, leaving students constantly afraid in their own homes.
The Student Union had warned that if the situation didn’t improve, students would take to the streets in protest.
The university management has stated that it is not responsible for the safety of students outside the campus.
The management, however, sympathized with affected students but insists that securing off-campus areas is the responsibility of the police.
