The House of Representatives joint Committee has summoned the Ministers of Education, Foreign Affairs, Youth Development, and Interior to appear before it over alleged certificate racketeering.

The committee, led by Chairman Abubakar Hassan Fulata, expressed concerns over the alleged racketeering and vowed to address the matter squarely.

The invitation was also extended to other stakeholders, including the Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Committee of Vice Chancellors, National Universities Commission (NUC), and Penlight Media Ltd.

Fulata emphasized that the committee would consider anyone who fails to show up as encouraging corruption and certificate racketeering in the education sector.

The move followed an investigation by a journalist who uncovered the booming business of illicit certificate acquisition, including a Cotonou varsity degree that can be bagged within weeks.

The lawmaker described the act as “not only illegal but very dangerous to our collective wellbeing, future and the socio-economic development of the country as a whole”.
