Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has announced October 20, 2025, as the date for a nationwide protest march to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, calling for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu has been in detention since 2021 after his arrest in Kenya and subsequent repatriation to Nigeria. Despite court rulings ordering his release, the Nigerian government has continued to hold him in custody, prompting growing public criticism and calls for justice.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Sowore described the planned march as a united call for freedom and accountability.

“October 20, 2025! This is the day Nigerians rise with one voice to demand justice and freedom,” he wrote. “If you can’t attend, send someone who can. We march to the Aso Rock Villa for #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.”

Kanu’s continued detention has remained a contentious issue, sparking debates about rule of law and human rights in Nigeria. His supporters and several human rights groups have repeatedly accused the government of defying court orders.

The IPOB leader has also raised concerns about his deteriorating health while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), urging authorities to allow him access to adequate medical care.

The upcoming protest, organised under the banner of Sowore’s civic movement, is expected to draw activists, civil society groups, and pro-democracy advocates from across the country.
