Tinubu Lands in Brazil for State Visit, Set to Deepen Nigeria-Brazil Ties

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Brasília, Brazil, on Monday to begin a state visit aimed at strengthening Nigeria-Brazil relations.

Arriving from Los Angeles at the Brasília Air Base, he was warmly received by senior Brazilian officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria and Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, announced the visit as President Tinubu was welcomed by ministers, heads of key agencies, and private sector members set to engage in bilateral talks and sign Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

On Monday, an official ceremony with full military honours will take place at the Planalto Palace, where Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will hold a private meeting, followed by expanded bilateral discussions as the leaders will oversee MoU signings and address a joint press conference.

Tinubu’s itinerary includes meetings with the Brazilian Senate President, the Chamber of Deputies President, and the Supreme Federal Court President, alongside participation in the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum. Nigeria and Brazil, with diplomatic ties since the 1960s, have deepened cooperation since Tinubu’s inauguration in 2023.

Recent engagements include Tinubu’s attendance at the 2024 G20 Summit and the 2025 BRICS Summit in Brazil, and the Second Session of the Strategic Dialogue in Abuja from June 23–25, 2025, which yielded seven MoUs on defence, energy, tourism, and more.

Brazil supports Nigeria’s food security through initiatives like the $2.5 billion JBS investment and the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme, fostering job creation and agricultural mechanization.
