Elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has reaffirmed his belief that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains the most formidable candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election. In a recent interview, Yakasai emphasized that no current contender possesses the political structure, reach, or capacity to unseat the incumbent president.
Truth Live News gathered that Yakasai highlighted Tinubu’s significant support within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that the party controls the majority of states and enjoys backing from ministers and governors. He also pointed out that some opposition governors are aligning with Tinubu’s leadership, further consolidating his position.
Addressing the political dynamics in Northern Nigeria, Yakasai dismissed claims of a unified regional stance, stating that such assertions are individual opinions until Northern leaders formally convene and decide. He cautioned against premature speculation, emphasizing that the North alone cannot determine the next president.
Yakasai also called for a shift from ethnic and religious politics, urging political actors to focus on ideology and programs that serve the national interest. He criticized frequent defections among lawmakers, attributing them to a lack of ideological foundation in Nigeria’s political system.
In response to Yakasai’s remarks, opposition groups, including the Obidient Movement, expressed respect for the elder statesman but disagreed with his assessment of Tinubu’s electability. They argued that younger, visionary Nigerians are capable of better governance and should be considered for leadership roles.
As he approaches his 100th birthday this December, Yakasai attributed his longevity to divine grace and family genetics. With over 80 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he expressed gratitude for a fulfilling life and continued engagement in national discourse.
Yakasai’s statements have sparked discussions on the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, highlighting the importance of unity, ideology, and national interest in Nigeria’s democratic process.
