President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States, citing the decline of the US movie industry due to foreign incentives attracting American filmmakers.

“The US movie industry is dying a very fast death because other countries offer incentives to draw filmmakers and studios away from the US,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Trump claims this is a concerted effort by other nations and poses a national security threat, also citing “messaging and propaganda” concerns.

The president has authorized the Department of Commerce and the US Trade Representative to begin implementing a 100% tariff on foreign films entering the US.

“We want movies made in America, again!” Trump emphasized.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick responded, saying they’re “on it,” but details on implementing the tariffs are yet to be provided.

This move follows Trump’s appointment of Hollywood veterans Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson to revitalize the US film industry.

The tariffs could lead to retaliation, potentially harming the US industry, according to former Commerce official William Reinsch.

The decision is part of Trump’s broader trade policy, which has triggered a trade war with China and imposed global tariffs, causing market volatility and recession fears.
