The Muslim Congress (TMC) has expressed deep sadness over the brutal murder of 16 northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State, urging all affected communities to exercise restraint and resist retaliation.

Violence only deepens wounds and perpetuates cycles of conflict, according to the council, which instead advocates for placing trust in the legal system to deliver accountability.

The TMC described the killings as a senseless act of violence fueled by baseless accusations and mob hysteria, highlighting the fragility of peace and the urgent need for unity and justice in Nigeria.

The council extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, who have been robbed of their loved ones in a horrific manner.

TMC emphasized that the tragedy in Uromi is not merely a local tragedy but a national crisis that exposes the dangers of mob justice, ethnic profiling, and vigilante actions.

The council stressed that every Nigerian citizen is entitled to fundamental rights, including safety, dignity, and fair treatment under the law.

Condemning extrajudicial killings, TMC described them as an affront to justice and a threat to Nigeria’s fabric.

“Mob killings are vile and absolutely condemnable, and even in cases where suspicions arise, the only lawful recourse is to surrender suspects to proper authorities, not subject them to brutal mob violence,” the council noted.

The council called for an urgent, thorough, and impartial investigation into the heinous crime to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice and such acts are never repeated.
