A member of the United States Congress has warned Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu that Washington will not remain silent over claims of ongoing attacks against Christians in the country.
Riley Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, was responding to comments by President Donald Trump, who recently threatened possible US military action if what he described as “genocide against Christians” in Nigeria is not stopped.
In a post on social media, Moore urged the Nigerian government to take Trump’s remarks seriously, saying the US “will not look the other way”.
“To the Government of Nigeria: President Trump has provided warning. If you do not act to stop the killing of our brothers and sisters in Christ, the era of the US ignoring this is over,” he wrote.
He added that Trump’s resolve should not be tested, saying many have tried and failed in the past.
President Tinubu has previously dismissed accusations that Nigeria is targeting any faith group, insisting the country remains committed to protecting freedom of worship for all citizens.
Nigeria continues to battle widespread insecurity, including banditry, extremist attacks, kidnappings and long-running clashes between communities. Experts say these conflicts have resulted in deaths among both Christians and Muslims.
Trump and several conservative allies in the US have recently intensified claims of persecution of Christians in Nigeria, a narrative that has triggered strong reactions across political and religious lines.
