Venezuela has announced plans to begin direct flight operations to Nigeria through its national airline, CONVIASA, marking a major step in strengthening aviation and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The announcement came during a visit to Abuja by Venezuela’s ambassador to Nigeria, Alberto Castellar Padilla, who met with Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
According to a statement from Tunde Moshood, special adviser to the minister, the meeting focused on establishing direct air connectivity between the two nations. Ambassador Padilla said CONVIASA Airlines is fully prepared to launch the service and called for Nigeria’s support to ensure a smooth rollout.
“We are ready and equipped to commence direct flight operations to Nigeria without delay,” the envoy said.
Minister Keyamo welcomed the initiative, calling it a “significant milestone” in Nigeria’s efforts to expand its international flight routes and foster deeper engagement with South America. He highlighted the potential for increased trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
“This is a historic move that aligns with our agenda to open up Nigeria’s airspace to more international routes and foster greater global connectivity,” Keyamo stated. “We welcome CONVIASA Airlines and look forward to a successful partnership that benefits both nations.”
To accelerate the process, the minister has set up a joint technical committee, including officials from the Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), to oversee approvals and ensure a smooth entry process for the airline.
