CROSS RIVER, CALABAR — Following a powerful windstorm that struck Calabar Metropolis and parts of the Southern Senatorial District on Wednesday, the Cross River State Government has urged residents to remain vigilant and take safety precautions amid ongoing cleanup and recovery efforts.

The windstorm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, caused significant damage to infrastructure, including homes, electricity poles, school buildings and trees across the city center.

In an official statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, the government warned that the aftermath of the storm poses continued risks to public safety. “We advise residents to trim overgrown trees around their homes and avoid areas with downed electricity poles and wires,” Ekpang stated.

He emphasized that such steps are necessary to “ward off any impending danger or fatalities.”

The government also appealed to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company and other relevant agencies to act promptly to restore power and clear storm debris.

According to the statement, officials are expected to “rectify all damages caused to electricity facilities” to help restore normalcy.

Dr. Ekpang further implored residents without essential engagements to stay off the roads. “Those who do not have any serious business going out on the streets and roads are hereby enjoined to remain indoors until normalcy is restored,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s concern for public safety, Ekpang concluded with a call for collective responsibility: “The government solicits the cooperation and understanding of residents so we do not register any casualty.”

No fatalities have been officially confirmed as of press time, but emergency response teams are on alert, and damage assessments are ongoing.

The Cross River State Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to remain calm and adhere to advisories until full recovery is achieved.
