Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, with tributes pouring in from across the country and beyond.

The Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, described the late president as an “incorruptible leader” who made lasting contributions to the nation’s military and democratic development.

Buhari, who passed away in London at around 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness, was honoured by Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters in a condolence statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau.

General Musa praised Buhari’s leadership, calling him a symbol of integrity, discipline, and national unity.

“The late President Buhari was a symbol of dedication to national service,” he said.

“He fought tirelessly for the unity and indivisibility of our great country. His leadership, courage, and principles will continue to inspire generations of citizens.”

The Defence Chief added that Buhari’s well-known zero tolerance for corruption and indiscipline made him a moral example for future leaders.

Former Chief of Army Staff and ex-Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (Rtd), also paid tribute, describing Buhari as “one of Nigeria’s greatest sons” and “a global statesman of principle and conviction.”

Buratai recalled Buhari’s pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s military response to insurgency during his presidency.

“When he appointed me Chief of Army Staff on 13 July 2015, it was a turning point. His clear strategic direction allowed us to reclaim all territories previously held by Boko Haram,” he said.

“The military became more professional, better trained, and better equipped under his leadership.”

Buratai added that Buhari’s character marked by integrity, simplicity, and patriotism would remain a guiding light for future generations.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also mourned his longtime colleague, calling him “a patriot and soldier” who did his best for Nigeria.

“He played his role as a soldier, administrator and statesman. His death is a great loss to the nation,” Obasanjo said in a statement from his media office.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called Buhari’s passing “a national tragedy,” praising his discipline, patriotism, and lifelong service to Nigeria.

“From the battlefield to the presidency, Buhari served with firm belief in Nigeria’s unity. He was a soldier of principle and a leader of formidable will,” Atiku said on X (formerly Twitter).

Other tributes poured in from governors, political leaders, and civil society figures. Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe described Buhari as a nationalist who “dedicated his life to the service and unity of his fatherland.”

“His death is a huge loss to the country,” Buni said. “He served with honour both as a military and civilian president.”

Senator Aishatu Binani also mourned the late president, calling him “a father and mentor” whose advice and support she personally cherished.

“I am shocked and saddened beyond words. Baba Buhari lived a life of service to Nigeria and beyond,” she said while announcing the suspension of her scheduled political event in honour of the late president.

Prominent figures across Nigeria’s political spectrum echoed similar sentiments, describing Buhari as a man of discipline and purpose who remained committed to his vision of a united, corruption-free Nigeria.

At his 2015 inauguration, Buhari famously said: “I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody.” And as he stepped down in 2023, he offered a message of reflection and humility:

“There is no doubt I hurt some people… I wish they would pardon me.”

His legacy remains complex celebrated for his anti-corruption stance and military discipline, yet often criticised for failing to address national disunity and rising insecurity. Still, his impact on Nigeria’s political landscape is undeniable.

As tributes continue to flood in, the nation prepares to lay to rest one of its most influential and controversial figures in modern history.
