Activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam has stated that Senate President Godswill Akpabio does not have the authority to decide which senator stays or leaves.
According to Idam, this power rests with the constituents, not Akpabio.
Idam’s statement comes after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension following allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio.
Idam noted that the Akpabio-led Senate’s actions have excluded the people of Kogi Central from the Senate for six months, effectively shielding Akpabio from investigation.
Idam argued that the Senate President cannot preside over proceedings discussing allegations against himself, citing Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
He insisted that a commission of inquiry, not the Akpabio-led Senate, should investigate the allegations.
