Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has confirmed that he will run for president in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
“This time, I’m serious about running,” Al-Mustapha said during an interview with the BBC Hausa service, where he discussed Nigeria’s democracy, security, poverty, and his role during the military era under late General Sani Abacha.
Al-Mustapha stated that he has already started speaking with international observers about the need to monitor Nigeria’s elections closely.
“That is why we have discussed with foreign countries, asking them to closely monitor Nigeria, especially regarding the elections, because election results are usually written,” he said.
The former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, ruled out joining any political alliance that contradicts his beliefs.
“If their ideology is different from ours, then I don’t want to be part of something shameful that would bring dishonor to the country with my involvement,” he said.
Al-Mustapha also dismissed the possibility of supporting another candidate, saying “there is no possibility of our paths crossing politically.”
