Malam Mamman Daura, the eldest family member of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians for their outpouring of support following Buhari’s death.

In a statement issued by presidential aide Garba Shehu, Daura said the participation of people from across Nigeria made the mourning period more bearable for the family.

He specifically thanked President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu for their “comforting support,” noting that Vice President Kashim Shettima also visited both in the UK and Daura during the mourning period.

“We are deeply grateful to the President for his thoughtful gestures, including declaring a public holiday and renaming the University of Maiduguri after Buhari,” Daura said.

He extended appreciation to current and former members of the federal cabinet, lawmakers, state governors, religious and traditional leaders, and citizens across the country who offered condolences. International leaders, including King Charles III, UN Secretary General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed, and the heads of the African Union and ECOWAS, were also acknowledged for sending messages of sympathy.

Daura described Buhari’s death as “an irreparable loss” but said the overwhelming support “has been a balm to the family.”

Business leaders such as Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Muhammadu Indimi, Dahiru Mangal, Kola Adesina, and Nasiru Danu were among those who visited Daura to pay their respects.

“All of Nigeria came out in force to bury Buhari, condole with us, and pray for him,” Daura said. “We are deeply grateful for the visits, condolence messages, and prayers. May the Almighty Allah bless and reward you all.”
