CALABAR, CROSS RIVER – The Cross River State Government has reaffirmed the ban on commercial motorcycles within Calabar metropolis and Calabar South, citing security concerns and urban order as primary reasons for the restriction.

In a press release issued on July 4, Chief Press Secretary Linus Obogo stated the ban remains in full force across key areas such as Murtala Muhammed Highway, IBB Way, Mary Slessor Avenue, and MCC Road.

Obogo explained, “The government is committed to protecting lives and ensuring sanity within urban transportation. This directive is not new; it’s a reinforcement of existing safety measures.”

He listed affected areas to include Ndidem Usang Iso (Mariam Road), Diamond Hill, Calabar Road, and Etta Agbor. He emphasized that operators found violating the directive will be arrested and prosecuted.

Despite the ban, Obogo clarified that commercial motorcycles are permitted in designated routes within 8 Miles Area, including Nasarawa, Bacoco, Ikot Eneobong, and Tinapa Road, among others.

“The allowed zones were carefully selected to balance economic activity with public safety,” Obogo added, urging operators to “adhere strictly to the routes provided or face legal consequences.”

He also reminded security agencies that enforcement lies exclusively with the Office of the State Security Adviser, warning against unauthorized actions by individuals or groups.

This move underscores the government’s effort to regulate commercial transport while mitigating crime and traffic accidents often linked to motorcycle operations in densely populated areas.
