A medical evacuation plane operated by AMREF Flying Doctors, a Cessna Citation XLS, crashed into a residential area in Mwihoko, Kiambu County, near Nairobi, Kenya, killing six people on August 7, 2025.
The aircraft, which departed Wilson Airport at 2:17 PM local time en route to Hargeisa, Somaliland, lost contact with air traffic control three minutes after takeoff.
By 3:00 PM, the plane plummeted into a neighborhood, causing a devastating explosion and fireball, according to eyewitnesses. Debris scattered across homes, leaving a trail of destruction.
The crash claimed the lives of four individuals on board, including the pilot, doctors, and nurses dedicated to medical evacuation services.
Two residents in a house struck by the plane also perished, and two others on the ground sustained serious injuries.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, with AMREF Flying Doctors committing to full cooperation.
Local residents reported hearing a loud bang before seeing flames, with emergency responders quickly arriving to secure the scene and assist the injured.
