The latest clashes reportedly claimed no fewer than 40 lives, several others injured as well as displacing hundreds in the past two weeks.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region in a post on his X account, intelligence sources revealed that the crisis which broke out on May 9, and was sparked by a confrontation over farmland encroachment between a Bandawa youth, Buhari Malamby, and two Fulani herders whose cattle had allegedly strayed onto his farm.

  • Sokoto Bizman Gets N20m Compensation From DSS After Accidental Shooting

    Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

The Department of State Services (DSS) has finally paid the sum of N20 million to a businessman who was mistakenly shot by men of its operatives in Sokoto State during one of its operation.

Recall that in 2016, during a pre-dawn operation to arrest a suspected gunrunner in Jos, Plateau State, DSS operatives mistakenly shot and injured the businessman who incidentally bears the same name with the suspected gunrunner. The gunrunner was eventually arrested.

Two years after the shooting, in 2018, the businessman, through his lawyer, Idris Akibu, approached a Federal High Court in Bauchi.

Delivering judgement on the matter with suit number FHC/J/CS/18/2018, the court, presided by Justice Muhammed Shittu Abubakar, ordered the DSS to pay N10 million in damages to the injured businessman.

Obeying the court’s judgement, in mid-March, the DSS Director-General, Mr. Tosin Ajayi, approved the payment of N10 million damages awarded by a court to the businessman six years earlier.

To compensate for time lost, the DG handed the businessman an additional N10 million, bringing the total sum to N20 million.

At the time, Mr. Ajayi directed the DSS hospital to officially integrate the businessman into the services’ medical care system, which would enable him to enjoy free medical services anytime he so desired.

A security source who preferred anonymity, said the businessman arrived in the hospital “a few days ago, and has been undergoing free medical tests and treatment from the hospital’s best doctors.”

“True to the DG’s directive, the man has been in the VIP ward which, of course, is fully air-conditioned. They have been running series of checks and giving him round-the-clock medical attention, in order to make him regain full control of his limbs. I even understand the DG asked that he be fed for free.

“This is the third DG since this unfortunate case of mistaken identity happened. We were very happy when our new DG directed that we pay the money. He even added another N10 million to the victim’s money.

“It goes to show that, not only can security agencies be law-abiding, but we can also be full of the milk of human kindness,” the source said.

  • Islamic Cleric Confesses to Student’s Ritual Murder in Court

Abdulrahman Bello, an Islamic cleric and prime suspect in the brutal murder of Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a final-year student, stunned the Kwara State High Court on Wednesday with a chilling confession.

In a video presented as evidence, Bello admitted to killing Lawal for a money ritual, stating he acted alone and would have spared her if he had access to human body parts elsewhere.

The trial, presided over by Justice Hannah Olushola Ajayi, revealed gruesome details through testimony from Inspector Ayodele Azeez of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Azeez recounted how the case, initially reported on February 14, 2025, led to Bello’s arrest at his Olunlade residence, where police recovered an axe, cutlass, charms, a blood-filled container, and Lawal’s severed hands.

Bello’s video confession, recorded in the presence of a police-provided lawyer, Barrister A.O. Ahmed, was contested by defense counsel Barrister Agbede, who alleged coercion. Justice Ajayi overruled the objection, admitting the evidence and ordering the video played in court. Azeez further testified that Bello’s call records linked him to four accomplices, including his teacher, a fellow student, and close friends, all now co-defendants.

The court adjourned at 11:32 a.m., with proceedings set to resume later today as the case continues to grip the nation.

  • Edo Community Petitions IGP, DSS, Others Over Alleged Murder Of Native By Police

    Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

The inhabitants of Enwan community in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Director, State Security Services (DSS), and the Edo State government over the alleged invasion and killing of a young man in the community by men suspected to be policemen.

Others copied in the petition were the Police Service Commission, lawmakers representing the area in the Senate, House of Representatives and the Edo State House of Assembly.

The petition was jointly signed by Dr. Steve Momoh, Chairman, Enwan Progressives Forum Elder’s Council; Comrade Israel Omokhafe, Chairman , Enwan Progressives Forum, and legal counsel to Enwan Progressives Forum, Barr. (Mrs) Rachael Akerele, and made available to newsmen in Benin City.

In the petition, they called for a proper investigation into the way and manner the suspected policemen allegedly came in a private vehicle.

The inhabitants alleged that one Dr. Babatunde said to be a staff of one of the leading private universities in the country justified the said invasion that resulted in the killing of one Mr. Cosmos.

They also accused Babatunde of “spreading false, defamatory, and inflammatory narratives across social and mainstream media platforms” regarding the incident.

They said the policemen were unprovoked, yet they shot and killed Cosmos while he and others were trying to inquire from the police, their mission in the community.

According to them the policemen were dressed in black “tactical gear” marked RRS EKS, adding : “Their mission was never disclosed, and there were no visible warrants, badges, or proof of jurisdictional authority, thereby casting immediate doubts on the legality of their operation.

“This operation, disturbingly reminiscent of Gestapo-style tactics, flagrantly violated the principles of due process, the rule of law, and the fundamental respect for human life. The unidentified operatives approached the Enwan Mixed Secondary school, a space that typically serves as a hub of academic activity, and surrounding residential areas in a hostile and confrontational manner, inciting fear, confusion, and chaos among residents, particularly against the backdrop of existing insecurity in Edo North region and particularly Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, characterized by farmer-herder conflicts, kidnappings, and ritual attacks.

“This act of extrajudicial killing, the wanton and disproportionate use of deadly force, and the evident jurisdictional overreach constitute a grave violation of both Nigerian law and internationally recognized human rights standards.

“The action and invasion were unlawful, illegitimate, and in direct contravention of Sections 34, 36 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantee the right to life, the dignity of the human person, right to fair hearing, which is a cornerstone of human rights and due process, and freedom from inhuman or degrading treatment.

They said no warrant of arrest was issued for any individual before the alleged invasion, adding that the alleged comments by Wahab’s worsened the situation.

“Most disturbingly, Dr. Babatunde baselessly accused Enwan community of being a hub for ritual killings, internet fraud, kidnapping, and even issuing fake customs documents, an unsubstantiated slanderous statement which amounts to dangerous ethnic profiling and collective criminalization of a peaceful people” and attempt to demonise Enwan Community.

They, among others, demanded joint independent inquiry involving representatives from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Edo State Command, human rights organizations, and community representatives to ensure a transparent and unbiased investigation.
