  • Tinubu Relocates Army Chief to Benue Amid Escalating Herdsmen Attacks

    Toba Owojaiye reporting

    Abuja, Nigeria

In response to the escalating violence in Benue State, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has relocated to Makurdi, the state capital, accompanied by his Principal Staff Officers (PSOs).

This strategic move aims to address the persistent killings of innocent villagers by herders and militia groups.

Truth Live News gathered that the gruesome situation in Benue has reached a critical point, with numerous communities experiencing attacks that have led to significant loss of life and displacement. For instance, in late May 2025, over 40 individuals were killed in coordinated assaults across four communities in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) . Earlier in April, attacks in the Sankera axis, encompassing Ukum, Logo, and Katsina-Ala LGAs, resulted in at least 72 deaths

The violence has not only led to loss of life but also massive displacement. According to the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), over 50 communities across five LGAs have been sacked by armed herdsmen, forcing residents to flee their homes . This displacement has disrupted farming activities, threatening food security in a state known as Nigeria’s “Food Basket”

Between November 2024 and April 2025, Benue recorded at least 244 fatalities due to banditry and herdsmen attacks, the highest in Nigeria’s North Central region during that period . The persistent attacks have prompted calls from local leaders for urgent federal intervention to restore peace and security in the region.

The relocation of the Army Chief to Benue signifies a heightened military focus on addressing the security challenges in the state. It is hoped that this move will lead to more effective coordination of security operations and a reduction in the violence that has plagued the region.

  • Youths Protest in Benue Over Abduction of Female Traders

Youths in Owukpa, Benue State, have taken to the streets to protest the recent abduction of female traders in the area.

The abduction occurred on the weekend when suspected armed men hijacked a Benue Links vehicle and took several female passengers captive along the Owukpa-Orokam road.

The attackers, believed to be armed herdsmen, ambushed the vehicle near the Eyiupi community as the victims were traveling from Orba market in Enugu to Owukpa.

The kidnappers have not made any contact with the families of the victims or made any demands since the incident.

The protest by the youths has led to the blockade of the Orokam-Owukpa-Okpoga road, with travelers from Enugu and neighboring communities currently stranded.

The youths are demanding action from the government to rescue the victims, insisting that nobody should leave or enter the community until something is done.

  • Court Jails 15 Foreign Nationals for Cybercrime, Internet Fraud

A federal high court in Lagos has sentenced 15 foreign nationals to one year in prison each for their involvement in cyber-terrorism and internet-related fraud.

The convicted individuals, 11 from the Philippines, two from China, one from Malaysia, and one from Indonesia, were found guilty of charges filed by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including possession of fraudulent documents and unlawful cyber activities.

Among those sentenced are Winnie De Jesus, Kayceelynn Remorin, and Tan Soon Kar. The EFCC alleged that some of the convicts, operating under the company name Genting International Co. Ltd, deliberately gained unauthorised access to computer systems in Lagos in December 2024. Their actions were said to undermine Nigeria’s economic and social security.

The group was also accused of recruiting Nigerian youths to carry out identity theft and impersonation scams for financial gain. For example, Remorin was charged with impersonating a woman named Anastacia Lim to benefit her employer.

All 15 defendants pleaded guilty, and the court accepted a plea bargain presented by the EFCC prosecutors.

Judges Yellin Bogoro and Alexander Owoeye sentenced each person to one year in prison and fined them ₦1,000,000 (about \$680) each. After serving their time, the convicts are to be deported to their home countries within seven days, according to the court order to Nigeria’s Immigration Service.

Additionally, all electronic devices seized from the group were ordered to be permanently forfeited to the Nigerian government.

The EFCC welcomed the court’s decision as a strong message against foreign-backed cybercrime operations within Nigeria.
