A fourth round of talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled to take place in Rome, has been postponed due to differences in approach.

A senior Iranian official stated that a new date will be set depending on the US approach, citing US sanctions on Iran as a major obstacle to resolving the nuclear dispute through diplomacy.

Iran had accused the US of contradictory behavior and provocative statements after Washington warned Tehran of consequences for backing Yemen’s Houthis and imposed new oil-related sanctions.

Oman, which mediated earlier sessions of US-Iran talks, announced that the next round of nuclear discussions would be rescheduled for logistical reasons.

Tehran will continue to engage seriously and resolutely in result-oriented negotiations with the US, according to Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson.

The US and Iran have been conducting negotiations over a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program in return for the lifting of financial sanctions.

Recall that Washington imposed sanctions on entities accused of involvement in the illicit trade of Iranian oil and petrochemicals, while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Iran of consequences for supporting the Houthis, who control northern Yemen and have attacked ships in the Red Sea in what the group says is solidarity with the Palestinians.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei criticized the US approach, stating that American decision-makers lack goodwill and seriousness in advancing diplomacy.

“The responsibility for the consequences and destructive effects of the contradictory behaviour and provocative statements of American officials regarding Iran will lie with the American slide,” Baghaei said.
