At least 15 traders have been killed in a deadly ambush by armed assailants in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The victims were returning from the popular Oweto market on Saturday evening when gunmen launched a surprise attack on them.

A former Vice Chairman of Agatu LGA, John Ikwulono, confirmed the incident, stating that many others sustained injuries in the assault.

Five of the victims were killed near a stream called Abekoko, located between Ogbayi and Ogwumogbo, with one of the deceased identified as a man known as Ali from Ogwumogbo.

The Agatu LGA Chairman’s aide alleged that the attack was carried out by armed herders.

The incident has sparked concern and outrage in the community, with many calling for increased security measures to prevent such attacks in the future.
