Patience Jonathan Bags PhD, Recounts Ordeal In Hands Of Lecturers

Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has narrated what made her almost abandon her Doctor of Philosophy program at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

According to the former first lady, the pressure from her lecturers was enormous.

Dame Patience was recently awarded a PhD in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling.

Expressing Joy and gratitude to God during a testimony time at Streams of Joy International Church, the ex-first lady recounted how her academic journey was marked by moments of frustration and self-doubt.

According to her, academic demands, such as repeated assignments and high expectations from lecturers, almost pushed her to abandon her educational pursuit.

“At times, my lecturer would get me angry and say, ‘Go and repeat this page.’

“Shey this man don’t know that I’m old.

“Very soon, I will leave this place and rest because what will I do with it? It’s just to keep the brain moving.

“But to God be the glory. That thing that seemed impossible, God made it possible, and I graduated,” she said.

Also she noted that she thought she won’t make it when she started the programme, having served as Nigeria’s First Lady.

“When I went to pick up my PhD form, I thought I would not make it.

“I said, I have finished my career. I have served as First Lady of Nigeria. What am I going to do with a PhD?

“But God told me to go there. He said, ‘If your children can make it, why can’t you?”

She said during the programme, she was not afraid to ask questions even though she was the oldest student in the classroom.

“I would go to class and sit on the bench with my children. I was the ‘Mama’ among them, and I wasn’t ashamed.

“The teacher would be teaching, I would raise my hand and ask questions because the younger ones would understand immediately, but, as a ‘Mama’, I had to ask questions three times before I understood one thing,” she said.

  • “Stop Hide and Seek, Join APC Openly” Matawalle Urges Zamfara Governor

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle has urged the Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal to feel free to declare his intention by formally joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Matawalle noted that there is no need for ambiguity or hesitation in political affiliation.

The minister who made the call while speaking at his residence in Maradun, Zamfara State,

said the APC remains a party built on humility, respect, and progressive ideals.

He extended an open invitation to Governor Lawal, encouraging him to join the APC through proper and transparent channels in the interest of the state’s development.

According to the Minister, there is no personal animosity between himself and the governor.

“We would be glad to welcome him into the fold of leaders committed to security, development, and peace,” Matawalle said.

In a statement via a former Commissioner for Information in Zamfara State, Ibrahim Dosara, Matawalle emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a leader focused on national development and unity, and welcomes all individuals interested in contributing to national progress.

“President Tinubu is a champion of peace and growth. He is always open to those who share his vision of a prosperous Nigeria,” the statement read.

Furthermore, Matawalle reiterated his commitment to the welfare of his supporters and urged them to continue supporting President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in areas such as security, agriculture, health, and economic development.

He also pointed out the administration’s ongoing efforts to curb insecurity in Zamfara and other parts of northern Nigeria.

“The President has directed security agencies to end the spate of insecurity before the end of the year, and both the Ministry of Defence and security agencies are working diligently to meet that goal,” Matawalle noted.

While acknowledging the federal government’s progress on security, Matawalle expressed concerns over what he described as a lack of effective coordination at the state level.

Reflecting on his tenure as governor, he noted that efforts were made to improve security and social welfare, and he called for more transparency and effective governance in the current administration.

“We managed the state with limited monthly allocations ranging between ₦3 billion to ₦4 billion,” Matawalle said.

“The current administration reportedly receives between ₦19 billion and ₦24 billion monthly. It is important for the government to provide clarity on how these resources are being utilized for the benefit of the people.”

He called on Governor Lawal to provide details on federal allocations and the state’s development spending, emphasizing the importance of accountability in public service.

  • Gov. Otti’s Commissioner, Chukwumerije Narrowly Escapes Death

Chaka Chukwumerije, commissioner for Lands and Housing and right hand man to the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti was on Sunday attacked by unknown gunmen.

The incident occurred while Chukwumerije, was returning from Okigwe to Umuahia.

Confirming the incidence in a statement on Monday, brother of the victim identified as Dike Chukwumerije explained that, “he was on his way from Okigwe to Umuahia, when the car behind him opened fire on his vehicle.”

“It was not his time to die. So, he and the three others with him escaped unscathed, even though the car was riddled with bullets,” he wrote.

Truthlive News reports that Chukwumerije, who is son of renowned Nigerian politician Uche Chukwumerije has served as a Commissioner under Governor Alex Otti for the past two years.

He was praised by his brother for his integrity and dedication to public service.

According to Dike, his brother had been a loyal supporter of Governor Otti for over a decade, standing by him through successive election cycles, even in defeat.

“No, we didn’t send him off with a wish list. All we asked of him was – do not bring us shame. Don’t take what is not yours. And use every resource within your power to help our society become a better place for us all,” Dike said.

He said: “Every election since, at least, 2015 he has poured his heart, soul, and resources into campaigns. And when his team did not win, even when they were clearly rigged out, he came back home and licked his wounds in quietness and dignity.”

He continued, “Where we come from, no matter how provoked, we tend to keep a civil tongue. So, he has always played the sort of politics that has sat well with my own conscience.”

Reflecting on Governor Otti’s leadership, Dike said he now understands his brother’s long-standing loyalty.

“In two years, Abia has turned around… I don’t praise politicians lightly… But he is doing the job, and doing it to a level that we have not seen in Abia in many, many years. And, today, I am proud to be Abian,” he said.

He lamented the danger faced by those committed to public service, blaming the country’s socio-political system for prioritizing mediocrity over merit.

The statement added: “Unfortunately, it is people like this—who are totally, selflessly committed to public service—that are too often the victims of our current socio-political order… Those who are comfortable with doing things anyhow-anyhow are safe and ascending. While those who are not, are not.”

Despite the attack, Dike remained resolute, expressing gratitude that his brother’s life was spared.

  • Photos: Gov. Sanwo-Olu Launches Three New Trains With Larger Capacity

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday launched three new trains.

Sanwo-olu said the addition of these trains willdouble the current passenger capacity on the Blue Line, significantly enhancing service delivery for commuters.

“It’s a step forward in our efforts to make the daily commute in Lagos less stressful and more reliable,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor also disclosed that the state is moving ahead with plans to extend the Blue Line to Okokomaiko, with the project expected to be completed in 2026. He praised Lagosians for their continued support and patience as the government works to transform the state’s transit infrastructure.

First launched in September 2023, the Lagos Blue Line initially operated 12 daily trips. After a brief suspension in October of the same year, services resumed with an increased frequency of 54 trips per day, signaling growing demand for the route.

The recent delivery marks a significant milestone in the ongoing development of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) project — a key pillar of the government’s long-term plan to decongest traffic and modernize public transport.

As the state anticipates further expansions and system upgrades, commuters can expect more reliable service and improved coverage in the months ahead.

  • When Principle Stands Alone: The Ememobong Resignation and Eno’s Political Suicide

By Darlington Okpebholo Ray, writing from London

The recent resignation of Comrade Ini Ememobong from his position as Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port is not merely a bureaucratic transition; it is a moral declaration in an era where decency in politics is fast becoming extinct. In a nation where political opportunism has become the norm and ideological consistency a relic, Ememobong’s principled departure from Governor Umo Eno’s cabinet stands out as a rare and courageous act of conscience.

His refusal to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the governor’s controversial shift from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has restored a flicker of hope that not every Nigerian public officeholder is for sale. In his quiet but firm decision, Ememobong demonstrated that conviction must never be sacrificed on the altar of convenience. It is no exaggeration to say that he has earned the admiration of Nigerians far beyond the borders of Akwa Ibom State.

When I first heard that a pastor was aspiring to become the governor of the state of my dear wife’s birth, I was deeply inspired. I threw my support behind him with everything I had during his campaign, believing wholeheartedly that his spiritual background and presumed moral compass would make him the reformer the state needed. I congratulated him when he emerged victorious at the polls, convinced that a new era of purposeful leadership had dawned in Akwa Ibom, the state I have always considered my second home by virtue of marriage and cultural connection.

Little did I know that midway into this journey, our collective dream of having a righteous man rule would be abruptly cut short by the unholy trinity of greed, cowardice, and self-centred ambition. Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the APC represents a betrayal not just of the PDP that brought him to power, but of the very people who entrusted him with their future.

There is a growing disillusionment among political watchers and loyal citizens who ask, quite rightly: what is it about the APC that causes elected officials to abandon their mandates and cross over in droves? What hidden promises or threats lure governors to turn their backs on the very platforms and principles that once defined their campaigns?

Akwa Ibom remains one of Nigeria’s most resource-rich and politically stable states. The narrative that Governor Eno defected to attract more federal presence is not only unconvincing, it is intellectually dishonest. The state is doing far better than most others in the federation, and it has the infrastructure, revenue potential, and human capital to continue thriving without bending to the whims of federal partisanship.

The whispers on the ground suggest that fear, not foresight, compelled the governor’s defection. There are suggestions that he panicked over speculated federal attempts to undermine his position, and thus sought refuge in the same political party whose national leadership has overseen deepening economic misery and social unrest. If this is true, then what we are witnessing is not strategic realignment, but a retreat into political cowardice.

As the American essayist Eric Hoffer once noted, *“The selfish are always haunted by the fear of losing what they have acquired unjustly.”* This quote hauntingly fits the recent political manoeuvre in Akwa Ibom. Defections, when stripped of spin and sycophancy, are often about self-preservation, not public interest.

In contrast, Comrade Ememobong’s decision is a luminous example of what selflessness in public service looks like. He reminds us of the timeless wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi, who said, *“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”* Ememobong has chosen honour over power, character over convenience, and the people over politics.

His resignation should not be dismissed as an isolated act, but embraced as a call to higher political responsibility. It is a clarion reminder that leadership is not about personal comfort or political safety, but about standing for the truth, even when it is unpopular or perilous.

Governor Eno must understand that the legitimacy of governance does not end at the ballot box. It must be constantly renewed through fidelity to promises, consistency in values, and unbroken loyalty to the electorate. In abandoning the PDP, he did not just cross party lines, he crossed the moral line.

Ememobong’s exit is more than a resignation. It is a rebuke. It is a reminder. And it is a beacon. As Akwa Ibom navigates the troubled waters of this unexpected political realignment, let his courage inspire a new generation of leaders, men and women who will choose the people over the perks, principle over power, and purpose over party.

History will remember Ini Ememobong with dignity. The same cannot be said for those who traded theirs for temporary gain.

  • Niger Community Kicks As Gov Grants Pardon To 11 Death Row Convicts

Gaba Community in Lavun Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State has condemned the unconditional state pardon granted by Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago to 11 persons sentenced to death over the murder of seven farmers from their community.

In a judgement delivered by Justice Maimuna A. Abubakar of the State High Court, the convicts were sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide.

The Chairman of Gaba Development Association, Mr Paul Gana, expressed the community’s displeasure over the development while speaking with journalist in Minna on Thursday.

According to him, the pardon may trigger another conflict.

Gana said the victims were denied justice by such pardon and called on the state government to withdraw the pardon and respect the court judgement.

He said the victims were attacked on farm in 2018 by the convicts during which seven people were killed and two others were injured.

After vigorously pursuing the case for four years, Justice Maimuna A. Abubakar of State High Court in a 779 page judgement on February 2, 2022 found the 11 convicts guilty of conspiracy and culpable homicide and sentenced them individually to death by hanging.

But Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, granted the 11 convicts unconditional State pardon, on Tuesday.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Nasiru Mu’azu, disclosed this at a press briefing at the Government House, Minna.

He explained that the convicts were involved in a communal clash between Gaba and Amfani communities of Lavun local government area of the state, which led to the loss of lives and property.

The Commissioner said the State pardon was in exercise of the constitutional power of the Governor.

He said it was granted following a written request which was further reviewed between the Governor and the State Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.

He said the State pardon was also part of the reconciliatory efforts to ensure lasting peace between both communities, adding that several meetings were held, and all issues had been resolved.

Furthermore, he disclosed that the instrument of Pardon was signed on the 28th of May 2025 and had been gazetted.

Those granted State pardon were Mohammed Mohammed, Nana Alhaji Sheshi, Isah Baba Nmadu, Mohammed Mohammed Ndabida, Abubakar Baba Salihu, Baba Mohammed Shaba, Adamu Mohammed Babaminin, Haruna Mohammed, Isah Mohammed Alhaji Inuwa, Ibrahim Mohammed and Mohammed Isah.

  • Brave 10-year-old Boy Rescues Father From Killer Herdsmen

In a rather unexpected act of bravery for a child his age, one Eze Junior, a ten-year-old boy from Amakohia-Ubi in Owerri-West Local Government Area of Imo State, defended and rescued his father from herdsmen who attacked him.

The incident happened on Monday morning at the family’s farm, where Eze Junior had accompanied his father, Eze Anorue, at about 8 a.m.

While at the farm, two herders reportedly emerged from the nearby bush and shot at his father.

However, noticing that their bullets could not penetrate Anorue (who is a licensed hunter), the attackers resorted to using machetes. His son, who had initially fled a short distance upon sighting the herders, immediately returned to assist his father.

Remarkably, the boy, just like his father, was unharmed when the herders shot at him, as the bullets were also repelled. He then drew his own machete to confront the attackers. Fortunately, vigilantes, who had earlier agreed to comb surrounding bushes with hunters, were already approaching and heard the gunshots.

Upon sighting the vigilantes, the herders were said to have fled into a nearby bush, and all efforts to apprehend them proved futile.

While the boy was unhurt, Anorue was quickly taken to the hospital for treatment, where he is currently in stable condition.

“Yes, he’s okay. He is in stable condition, except for a machete cut on his hand. We hope he will be alright,” a source from the community said.

Furthermore, the source recalled that the same hunter had been attacked by herders in 2019 in the same community. They inflicted serious injuries on him and made away with the motorcycle he had taken to the bush for hunting.

“He is a well-known hunter. He went into the bush at about 9 p.m. to hunt when he encountered the herders who attacked and cut him with machetes before forcefully taking his motorcycle. A similar incident happened today — he had gone to his farm with his son, having planned to comb the bush with vigilantes. That was how they were able to save him,” the source narrated.

The community has reportedly been under constant invasion by herders for quite some time. Sources say the reason for the attacks might not be unconnected to the community’s firm refusal to allow herders to graze on their farmlands.

  • US Soldier Killed, Wife Abducted By Suspected Killer Herdsmen In Imo

A Nigerian-born American soldier has reportedly been gruesomely murdered by suspected killer Fulani herdsmen in Imo.

The assailants were said to have also kidnapped his wife.

The tragic incident which occurred on Sunday at approximately 4:00 p.m. along the Irete–Umuguma Road, near Golden Estate and Abba Father Avenue in Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area in Imo State, threw the residents of the area into palpable tension.

The deceased, said to hail originally from Ihiala in Anambra State, had traveled to the area with his wife to finalize a land purchase deal.

According to credible sources, the couple was accompanied by two local land agents and had arrived in a Toyota Highlander SUV for a scheduled site inspection.

The seemingly routine transaction, however, turned deadly when the group was ambushed by masked, gun-wielding assailants believed to be armed Fulani Herdsmen.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the armed men intercepted the vehicle and launched a vicious attack.

The soldier initially managed to escape the ambush but courageously returned in an attempt to rescue his abducted wife.

Tragically, he was overpowered by the attackers and fatally shot in the head. The gunmen then fled into the surrounding forest, taking the woman with them. The SUV was left abandoned at the scene.

One of the land agents sustained injuries while trying to escape, while the second narrowly evaded harm. Both survivors immediately alerted security operatives, who arrived at the scene shortly after to recover the soldier’s dead body and commenced preliminary investigations.

Following the ugly incident, residents of Umuguma and neighboring communities such as Irete, Nekede, Avu, Amakohia-Ubi, Okuku, and Ndegwu have continued to live in fear.

Truthlive News reports that these communities have in recent times experienced a troubling rise in the presence of armed herders.

The increasing trend of rural insecurity has sparked widespread anxiety, especially among landowners and prospective investors in the region.

Meanwhile, the Imo state police command is yet to confirm the incident as of the time of filing this report.

  • Enugu Govt Move Girl Rescued From Ritualists’ Den To Rehab Facility, Pledge Scholarship

The Enugu State Government has relocated Miss Ukamaka Okonkwo, the girl who was rescued from the dungeon of viral suspected ritualist to a government facility for therapy and rehabilitation.

Truthlive News had reported that Okonkwo was rescued during the invasion of the home of Obi Levi Obieze, the alleged ritualist and kidnapper, at Ndiagu Umumba in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Enih, who made this known on Sunday, said the move was based on an instruction given by the state Governor, Peter Mbah.

Enih said the governor also awarded a scholarship to Miss Okonkwo which would see her through education from her present class to the university.

“We travelled to Ndiagu Umumba, Ezeagu LGA, today at the governor’s instance to meet with the parents of Ukamaka, and to bring her to Enugu where she will undergo the necessary therapy and be fully rehabilitated.

“You can imagine the level of trauma this young girl must have passed through.

“So, the government wants to ensure that she bounces back fully in the shortest possible time.

“Therefore, the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development will be responsible for providing therapies and counselling to her before reintegrating her back into the society,” she said.

The commissioner said a government delegation visited Mr Theophilus Ezih and Mrs Chinenye Ezih, parents of the deceased boy, Chimaobi Ezih, at Agba Umana in Ezeagu Local Government Area to commiserate with them over the unfortunate incident.

She assured the people that the government and the relevant security were working on it, maintaining that all the culprits would be brought to book.

“As you are well aware, this is a government that has zero tolerance for crime. The government has already demolished the property linked to these dastardly acts in line with extant laws of Enugu State.

“The police and other security agencies are working with the government to track down and bring back those still at large to face justice.

“That is the only way to appease the spirits and souls of the deceased and to get our society rid of such crimes,” she added.
