The assailants were said to have also kidnapped his wife.
The tragic incident which occurred on Sunday at approximately 4:00 p.m. along the Irete–Umuguma Road, near Golden Estate and Abba Father Avenue in Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area in Imo State, threw the residents of the area into palpable tension.
The deceased, said to hail originally from Ihiala in Anambra State, had traveled to the area with his wife to finalize a land purchase deal.
According to credible sources, the couple was accompanied by two local land agents and had arrived in a Toyota Highlander SUV for a scheduled site inspection.

The soldier initially managed to escape the ambush but courageously returned in an attempt to rescue his abducted wife.
Tragically, he was overpowered by the attackers and fatally shot in the head. The gunmen then fled into the surrounding forest, taking the woman with them. The SUV was left abandoned at the scene.
