Police in Abia State have arrested a couple, Blessing and Sunday Emebo, for allegedly operating an unregistered orphanage at their home in Aba.
Officers from the Abia State Police Command raided the apartment, located on Ikot Ekpene Road, on 19 May after receiving credible intelligence. During the operation, 12 children, ranging in age from two months to 14 years, were rescued.
According to police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka, the illegal facility was operating out of the couple’s private residence.
Among the children found in their custody were nine boys and three girls, all reportedly from villages in Arochukwu Local Government Area. The rescued children include a two-month-old baby identified as Testimony Emebo.
“The children have been handed over to the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs for proper care,” Chinaka said in a statement on Monday.
The suspects are currently being questioned by officers at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Umuahia and will be charged once investigations are complete.
Chinaka urged parents to be vigilant and avoid entrusting their children to unknown individuals.
She also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities involving children to the nearest police station.
