    Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

A non governmental organization, Emmanuel Asemota Foundation, has taken its message of good personal hygiene, dangers of cultism and drug abuse to the students of Eyean Secondary School, Benin with the view of building a prosperous and a crime free society.

Addressing the students who were mainly boys, the Chief Operations Officer, Dr. Ochuko Onovae, said major attention has been focused on the girl-child over the years without considering the existence of the boy-child, hence the Emmanuel Asemota Foundation, righting the wrongs.

He said to start with, the boy-child must be taught to be self-confidence adding that, to have that done, it has to start with their personal hygiene.

Dr. Onovae said personal hygiene which includes regular bathing, washing of ones clothes, brushing of the teeth, shaving of the armpits can help them get rid of body odour and restore their confidence in public places.

Speaking on the theme: “Cultism and drug abuse”, the Chief Medical Officer of the foundation, Dr. Oghenekaro Hanunu, said both acts have sent young boys to their early graves.

She said that most boys today are being pressured to either join cult or take to drugs while still in their secondary school.

Dr. Hanunu said that when they are being pressured by their peers, they should relate it to their teachers or somebody they trusted and should not keep quiet about it.

Hanunu admonished them not to allow the efforts of their parents go down the drain by joining the secret cult noting that, the state government has begun the demolition of property linked to cult related activities and kidnapping.

The foundation however donated a brand new laptop to Moses Ehimache, an SSII students of the school who emerged winner of a quiz competition.

The foundation also donated writing materials to the students of the school.

  • Tension Mounts In 32 States Over Flooding Forecast

Edo, Kano, Jigawa, Lagos, Delta, Enugu, Ondo, Imo, Others In Critical Talks With NEMA To Avert Disaster

    Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

Following the flood that wrecked havoc in some communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, tension has begun to mount on the residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and over 30 states across the country.

Recall that in April, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had warned that 1,249 communities across 176 local government areas in 33 states and the FCT were within the high flood-risk areas in 2025.

According to a forecast issued during the official presentation of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, in Abuja, an additional 2,187 communities in 293 LGAs across 31 states and the FCT are expected to experience moderate flood risk this year.

States identified in the high-risk category include Edo, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, the FCT, Gombe Imo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

While the Federal Government revealed that 321 deaths were recorded in the 2024 flooding and 1,373,699 others were affected in 217 LGAs in 34 states, the casualty figure in Mokwa alone has hit 161, while unofficial sources put the figure at over 200, with more than 1,000 others still reportedly unaccounted for. Scores of houses and properties were also washed away.

However, due to the recent incident that happened in Mokwa in Niger State, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), in a condolence message issued by its spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, has expressed grave concern over the recurring nature of floods, citing climate change, poor urban planning, weak environmental management, and inadequate disaster preparedness as key underlying issues.

“This painful tragedy is not an isolated event. It echoes similar devastating floods that swept through several parts of Northern Nigeria in the past years, highlighting an alarming trend of recurrent natural disasters that continue to inflict severe humanitarian and socio-economic consequences on affected communities.

“The Forum is profoundly concerned by the recurring nature of these flood incidents, which reflect not only changing climate patterns but also systemic challenges in the areas of urban planning, environmental management, and disaster preparedness.

“The loss of so many lives and the scale of destruction witnessed in Niger State demand a robust, coordinated, and sustained response at the highest levels of government.”

Meanwhile, various agencies with disaster management and governments have stepped up efforts and preparation to checkmate future disasters and mitigate and manage their impact. For instance, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is effectively leading the charge and has held awareness campaigns in flood-prone states, including Kano, Jigawa, Ondo and others.

Director-General, Zubaida Umar, confirmed that the NEMA has organised a two-day technical meeting to analyse the disaster risk management of Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and Annual Flood Outlook (AFO)

Umar, who spoke in Ondo State yesterday, assured that with the use of weather satellite surveillance and flood risk modelling software, NEMA has been able to forecast at 90 per cent accuracy of rainfall patterns in the country for all Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“They have also determined areas that are of high risk probability of being flooded. NEMA, working with NiMet and NIHSA tools, has been able to analyse and produce Disaster Risk Management implications of the forecast for Agriculture, Health, infrastructure, Transportation and Water resources management.

“This has been deployed further to sensitise communities, LGAs and states that are likely to be impacted by flooding on how to act and live with it when it eventually happens.”

  • Breaking: Troops Eliminate 12 ISWAP Fighters in Borno

The Troops of the Nigerian Army Sector 3 deployed under Operation Hadin Kai have repelled a large-scale attack by ISWAP terrorists on an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mallam Fatori, Borno State.

It was gathered that the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, when over 150 terrorists launched a coordinated assault on troops position from the Kaniram axis.

According to reports, the terrorists advanced on foot, firing Automatic Grenade Launchers (AGLs) and deploying armed drones toward the battalion’s main defensive area.

The troops reportedly responded swiftly by engaging the terrorists with mortar and tank fire, targeting their avenues of approach from the western flank.

According to the report, “following an extensive firefight that lasted for about four hours, the terrorists managed to breach a section of the IDP camp perimeter.”

However, troops quickly regrouped and counter-engaged the infiltrating terrorists with superior firepower, forcing them to retreat in disarray.

  • Ronaldo The Difference as Portugal Defeats Germany to Seal UEFA Nations League Spot

    Toba Owojaiye reporting

In a pulsating clash of football giants, Portugal edged past Germany with a stunning victory that not only sealed their dominance but also confirmed their qualification to the next round of the 2025 UEFA Nations League.

Under the floodlights of the packed stadium, the Portuguese side, led by captain Bruno Fernandes, showcased tactical brilliance, composure, and attacking flair to overcome Germany 2-1 in a high-stakes battle that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Portugal struck first, with a thunderous goal from rising star João Neves in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a lapse in Germany’s midfield.

Germany responded with intensity, and their equalizer came in the 52nd minute through Kai Havertz, who slotted home a clever assist from Leroy Sané.

The defining moment arrived late in the 83rd minute when Diogo Jota curled in a spectacular finish that sent Portuguese fans into raptures.

Germany mounted a desperate late assault, but Portugal’s defense, marshaled by veteran Rúben Dias, held firm. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa made a decisive save in stoppage time, preserving the lead and ensuring qualification.

Portugal qualifies with an unbeaten record so far in the group stage, signaling their serious intent to go deep into the tournament.

Germany’s fate now hangs in the balance, with their next match becoming a must-win scenario as they battle to avoid an early exit.

Portugal’s Head Coach, Roberto Martínez, praised his players:

“This was about heart, hunger, and national pride. We knew Germany would push us to our limits, but we responded like true champions.”

Germany’s manager Julian Nagelsmann, visibly disappointed, admitted:

“We had moments, but moments don’t win you matches. Portugal punished our mistakes, they deserved this win.”

This victory rekindles memories of Portugal’s golden generation, combining seasoned leaders with emerging talent. With momentum on their side and qualification secured, many now tip Portugal as dark horses to win the entire tournament.

For Germany, the pressure intensifies, and questions around tactical cohesion and defensive reliability will likely dominate headlines in the coming days.

Portugal’s 2-1 triumph over Germany wasn’t just a win, it was a statement. A showcase of grit, flair, and strategic mastery. With this result, Portugal books its place in the next round, while Germany stares at uncertainty. The tournament just got a lot more interesting.

  • Elon Musk Slams US Tax, Spending Bill as ‘Disgusting Abomination’

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has strongly criticised the recent US tax and spending bill, calling it “outrageous” and a “disgusting abomination.”

The bill, passed by House Republicans in May, includes multi-trillion-dollar tax breaks and was praised by President Donald Trump as a “big, beautiful bill.”

Musk took to his social media platform X to voice his disapproval.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” he wrote. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

The billionaire had recently left the administration after working with a new team called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed to cut government costs by reducing federal workers and red tape.

The White House dismissed Musk’s remarks as unsurprising. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill.”

Musk’s departure came shortly after he expressed disappointment with the bill, highlighting that it increased the deficit instead of reducing it. “I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both, in my personal opinion,” he added.

Before this, Musk had supported President Trump’s return to office and repeatedly proposed cost-cutting measures to help streamline government spending.

  • Lagos Govt to Penalise Illegal Dumping, Littering

Lagos State will impose fines of ₦250,000 or jail terms of up to three months on individuals caught dumping refuse illegally, littering, or defacing public spaces, the state’s commissioner for environment and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has announced.

In a statement posted on social media, Wahab said the state government is stepping up efforts to tackle environmental abuse and will no longer tolerate deliberate violations.

“Lagos will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse,” Wahab said, adding that more than 3,000 offenders have already been arrested.

The commissioner said the state will begin full enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics starting from July 1.

He also reminded Lagos residents that existing laws banning cart pushing, public defecation, and illegal street trading remain in effect.

“This is about saving our environment for us and the generations to come,” Wahab said, urging citizens to dispose of waste responsibly.

The government plans to increase surveillance and public awareness campaigns as part of its drive to maintain a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

  • Minister Mourns Niger Flood Victims, Warns Nigerians to Heed Climate Alerts

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, has called on citizens to take climate warnings more seriously following a deadly flood in Niger State that killed more than 200 people and displaced over 3,000.

The flooding struck three communities in Mokwa Local Government Area on May 29, submerging homes, destroying farmlands, and cutting off access to essential infrastructure.

In a statement released Wednesday, Abdullahi described the disaster as “a stark reminder of the impact of climate change” and urged communities to pay close attention to early warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA).

“There is no gainsaying the fact that, throughout the country, communities and opinion leaders must take more seriously the Seasonal Climate Prediction by NiMET as well as the Annual Flood Outlook by NHSA,” the minister said.

Abdullahi, who hails from Niger State, also emphasised the urgent need for action to prevent future disasters. He recommended the desiltation of existing water bodies and the construction of new water-harvesting structures to reduce flood damage while supporting agriculture.

He stressed the importance of trauma counselling and long-term recovery efforts for those affected, especially families who lost loved ones and farmers whose livelihoods were washed away.

“This is a most difficult time for the families of the victims, their neighbours, and their communities,” he said. “My heart goes out to those who have lost their loved ones, along with their homes and crops.”

The minister extended his sympathy to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State, acknowledging the heavy burden of leading the state through the crisis. He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing national emergency agencies to deliver relief to the devastated region.

“There is evidence that this is being done,” Abdullahi said, adding that it is vital that help reaches those most affected.

Food supplies have already been distributed by the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), he confirmed.

Reflecting on recent years, Abdullahi expressed deep concern about the increasing frequency of water-related disasters in Nigeria, including boat accidents and floods that destroy farmland and reduce food security.

“Each rainy season in recent years has often left me with a deep sense of foreboding,” he said.

The flood in Mokwa is one of the worst natural disasters in Nigeria this year, and authorities are warning that more could follow if early warning systems continue to be ignored.

  • Gov Mbah Proposes Law to Ban Ritual Killings, Spiritual Charms, Forest Encampments in Enugu

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has submitted a new bill to the State House of Assembly aimed at tackling ritual killings, spiritual practices linked to crime, and illegal occupation of forests and private lands.

The proposed law, titled *‘Maintenance of Internal Security, Vigilance and Order’*, introduces sweeping regulations on spiritual activities, criminalises ritual-based practices for wealth or protection, and imposes strict penalties for the misuse of land.

Under Section 3 (1) of the bill, all spiritual practitioners in the state, including native doctors, herbalists, seers, diviners, and chief priests, must register with a state-designated agency. Failure to do so will attract a fine ranging from one to five million naira, up to two years imprisonment, or both.

The bill targets ritual activities believed to promote crime or sudden wealth. Section 15 criminalises practices like ‘okite’ and ‘odeshi’, rituals commonly used for spiritual protection or the supernatural acquisition of wealth. Anyone found using charms or substances under the guise of spirituality to facilitate crime or gain wealth outside legal means faces six years imprisonment, a fine of at least five million naira, or both. The same section penalises false claims of supernatural powers used to mislead the public for financial or social gain. Conviction will lead to three years imprisonment or a minimum three million naira fine. The law places the burden of proof on the individual claiming such powers, requiring them to demonstrate these abilities during investigations.

Section 16 focuses on the misuse of religious facilities, stating that any place of worship used to commit or support crime will be sealed and the individual responsible could face six years in prison or a fine of at least five million naira. Section 17 provides a 20-year prison sentence, without the option of a fine, for any individual who engages in ritual killings involving human body parts.

Security concerns also extend to land use. Section 13 mandates that anyone found in a forest or bush without a valid reason and under suspicious circumstances must be handed over to security agencies. The bill criminalises the use of forests and private properties for banditry, kidnapping, and ransom collection. Convicted persons could face up to 20 years imprisonment without the option of a fine. Property owners who allow non-security individuals to camp or settle on their land for non-agricultural reasons face up to two years in prison. Landlords who fail to report suspicious activity on their property are also liable.

Furthermore, any property used in connection with kidnapping, robbery, or banditry will be forfeited to the state. Proceeds from such crimes, if not claimed by a verified owner, will also become state property.

Private security firms operating in the state must register with the government and provide the identities of all armed personnel. Community leaders, particularly town union presidents-general, are required to submit monthly security reports to their local government chairmen or appointed authorities.

The bill imposes responsibilities on landlords, estate managers, and hotel operators to collect and report identification, occupation, and contact details of new tenants and guests. Hotels and lodging establishments must install surveillance cameras and submit footage to security authorities when requested. Landlords who fail to comply could be fined at least five hundred thousand naira, while hotel owners risk fines of up to one million naira.

This proposed legislation follows similar measures in Anambra State, where Governor Chukwuma Soludo launched Operation Udogachi in response to ritual-related crimes. That crackdown has led to the arrest of several popular native doctors, including Chidozie Nwangwu (known as Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki), Onyebuchi Okocha (Onyeze Jesus), and Ekene Igboekweze (Eke Hit), since March.

If passed, Enugu’s bill will introduce some of the strictest controls on spiritual and land-related activities in Nigeria’s southeastern region, signaling a firm commitment by the state government to address crime through legal and cultural reform.

  • FRSC Launches Nationwide Patrol for Eid el-Kabir Travel Safety

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has begun a nationwide special patrol to ensure safe and smooth travel during the Eid el-Kabir celebrations.

The operation runs from Wednesday, 5 June to Tuesday, 11 June 2025, and is aimed at managing traffic, reducing road crashes, and providing rapid emergency response during the festive period.

FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide announced the move in a statement on Wednesday, saying that over 36,000 personnel, including both regular and special marshals, have been deployed to highways and critical travel routes across the country. The patrol is supported by hundreds of operational vehicles, ambulances, motorbikes, and towing equipment to aid mobility and response efforts.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the exercise will cover 52 major road corridors known for high traffic volumes during the holiday season.

He added that mobile courts will be in operation nationwide to deal with traffic violations such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, use of mobile phones while driving, lane indiscipline, and unroadworthy vehicles.

To monitor drivers’ behaviour, FRSC officials will use radar guns and breathalysers to check for speeding and drunk driving. Night rescue teams and emergency response units have also been activated to handle any incidents swiftly.

He further said that the FRSC is working closely with the military, police, civil defence, the Department of State Services (DSS), and ambulance providers to strengthen road safety efforts during the Sallah period.

Motorists have been urged to obey traffic regulations and cooperate with enforcement officers. The public can report road accidents, traffic gridlocks, or obstructions by calling the FRSC toll-free line 122 or tuning in to National Traffic Radio on 107.1 FM.

The Corps Marshal called on all road users to act responsibly, stressing that safety on the roads is a shared responsibility and essential for a peaceful and crash-free Eid celebration.
