The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has accused some politicians, including unnamed members of Nigeria’s National Assembly, of financing and supporting violent attacks across the state.
Governor Alia made the claims during an interview on the television programme Politics Today on Friday.
He said a judicial panel he set up to investigate the causes of the ongoing violence has submitted an interim report indicating that political actors are behind a deliberate campaign to destabilise the region. The full report is expected soon.
“We established a judicial panel to find out why we keep experiencing attacks from both inside and outside the state, and we have received a preliminary report,” Alia said.
“Some politicians who are active in Abuja and the National Assembly are not just instigating the violence, but also providing support to the attackers, including shelter, funding, and equipment.
“This is unacceptable. If they want to fight for political power at the expense of the people’s safety, I will continue to protect the common masses.
“We are under siege. The attacks are planned and coordinated.”
Governor Alia promised to take strong action once the panel’s final report is released.
